Dog & Cat Shedding Explained: Three Types First, Then What to Supplement

Shedding is probably the most-asked topic among pet owners. But "shedding" itself is not a disease—it is a result. I usually have owners first tell the type, then decide whether and what to supplement.

1. Three types of shedding first

  • Physiological molting: once each spring and autumn, even shedding, no red skin or dandruff—normal metabolism, no panic;
  • Nutritional shedding: year-round heavy shedding, dry/brittle coat, split ends—often tied to insufficient essential fatty acids and B vitamins;
  • Pathological hair loss: patchy loss with scratching, redness, dandruff—rule out skin disease and parasites first; this is outside supplement scope.

2. Nutritional shedding—what is really lacking

  • Omega-3 / Omega-6 fatty acids: skin barrier and hair growth;
  • B-complex vitamins (B1 / B2 / B6): skin/coat metabolism and energy conversion; long-term deficiency makes coat rough and appetite poor;
  • Quality protein: hair itself is keratin; insufficient protein shows directly in coat volume and quality.

For products, Deep-Sea Fish Oil covers Omega-3/6 and B-Complex Vitamin Solution covers B1/B2/B6; together they are a common skin/coat combo. Specific content and feeding follow the product page.

3. How to feed so it is not wasted

The key is consistency, not one big dose. Feed as a combo, 4–8 weeks straight, then reassess; on-and-off is basically useless. Pair with brushing, quality staple protein, and stable room temperature, and molting goes much smoother.

Reminder: this is nutritional science, not a claim about any specific product, and not a substitute for veterinary care; shedding with redness, dandruff, or intense scratching—see a doctor first.
